A typical day began with colours rippling the darkness on the horizon. It was calm. It was quiet. Then, just as the sky changed, we heard the first cracks of sniper fire.

We faced east, so sunrise was the only time of day that we had the advantage over the Germans.

As the faintest glimmer of light crept across the sky, we could sometimes see a German head above the parapet. That was when we had our rifles ready. We slipped the gun through a loophole in the trench side. There was a cloth behind us, so we could not be seen.

And that was when we fired. The snap snap of bullets across No Man’s Land.

We never knew if we had hit a German.

Had they dodged our bullet? Or had it hit them, metal ripping into flesh? Were they now lying on the floor of their trench, their body in a death spasm, like MacDonald? Did their comrades stand hopelessly around them like we had done?

We never knew. But we had to try to kill them. If we didn’t kill them, then they would kill us.
